The monks of the Holy Mountain want to be photographed only reluctantly. To avoid major annoyance therefore it is essential to ask beforehand wether the monk allowes to be photographed.
Taking photos with permission often results in better images, you can approache as closer to the photo subject and a personal relationship with the other person is established.
Visitors to the holy mountain are primarily
Pilgrims.
So do not give the impression to the monks that photography is the main purpose for the visit to the holy mountain :-))
We recommend - also because of the large differences in altitude while hiking - a small, lightweight, unobtrusive photographic equipment:
- First choice is a small unobtrusive digital compact camera with a zoom 24-100 mm and high light intensity (f1.8 with Nikon P300)
- SLR camera with a quiet shutter and quiet autofocus
- Winder abschaltbar, Filmtransport per Hand
- Zooms 17-35 mm, 35-135 mm or 28-200 mm focal length
- additional zoom 70-300 mm focal length
- Available light lens 35 mm, 50 mm or 80 mm focal length with luminosity f1.2 oder f1.4
- Polarizing filter for use in bright sunlight or mist, yellow or red filter for black and white films
- Lens hood
- Mirror attachment for 90° image redirection
- Spare batteries
- Enough digital memory cards, as in the monasteries nothing is sold
- Slide films 64, 200 and 1600 ASA
- Black & White films 100 and 400 ASA
- Small, lightweight tripod, wire or remote shutter release
- Pinsel oder Reinigungstuch für staubfreie Linsen
- Silent, high-intensity digital camera with 8x zoom or digital movie camera
Attention: not in all the monasteries there is electricity to recharge the batteries !
Flash units are undesirable in most locations:
- in Catholicon and in chapels, when reading the Holy Mass
- in the refectory during the common Eucharist supper
- in the library of the monastery
Therefore right where the flashlight would actually be required ;-((
If you do
not speek the Greek language very well, it does in some cases (eg visit to the library) make sense to join Greek pilgrims. They get much more to see.
In addition, a small digital film camera with good microphone for recording sound documents (such as Holy Mass, choral songs during the Eucharist).
