Niemand glaubte damals, daß durch ein hohes Verkehrsaufkommen einmal eine zweite Fahrspur notwendig würde. Auch die Eisenbahn muß durch das Nadelör. | |

Ferry boat Wellington - PictonTwo ferry companies connect North- and Southisland over the Cook Strait - Interislander and Lynx.Mit dem Wohnmobil oder Auto ist es ratsam, rechtzeitig einen Platz auf der Interislander Fähre zu reservieren. Die Einfahrt in den Marlborough Sound ist landschaftlich sehr schön, also die Passage unbedingt bei Tage machen. Bei manchen Vermietern kann man das Fahrzeug in Wellington abgeben und erhält in Picton ein Neues (z.B. bei Hertz fuktionierte das problemlos) Für 2 Stunden kann es je nach Wetterlage in der selbst bei Seeleuten gefürchteten Cook Strait ganz schön ungemütlich werden, aber sobald das Schiff in die schützenden Fjorde des Marlborough Sounds einfährt ist es mit der Schaukelei vorbei. |

Telephone callVodafone bietet am airport in Auckland Chipkartenverträge und Leihhandys an.Sensationell billig ist jedoch eine Prepayd Telefonkarte. Sie kann von jedem Telefon aus benutzt werden (auch im Hotel oder B&B), da man zuerst eine kostenlose 0800-Nummer zum Provider wählt und dann eine PIN-Nummer zur Identifikation. Es gibt eine unüberschaubare Menge verschiedener Provider, am Besten Ihr fragt den Verkäufer im Kiosk, welche zum Telefonieren nach Deutschland am billigsten ist. Für nur 10 NZ$ (ca 5.40 Euro) konnte ich mehr als 1 Stunde nach Deutschland telefonieren. Und Telefonzellen gibs im Kiwi-Land an jeder Ecke. TravelseasonThe best travelseason for New Zealand is November until Mai. Ab Mitte Dezember bis Ende Januar ist absolute Hochsaison, da haben die Kiwi's selbst Urlaub.Im launischen neuseeländischen spring (November, December) ist es selbst in der Bay of Islands ganz im Norden zum Baden noch viel zu kalt ! |

Kiwis do not underestimate the risk of skin cancer lightly. In the mostly pleasant cool air one notices the intensity of the solar radiation not so directly. Especially during boat tours and extended hikes caution is required. |

A nice souvenir for those staying at home from the other end of the world are Christmas tree decorations: Penguins, Kiwi's with pointed caps, seals, Santa Claus on surfboards, ... the Kiwi's are hard to beat for their creativity and ingenuity. The most original, fancy Christmas accessoires we found in Christchurch and Dunedin. |
