Olympia tent roof construction
The tent roof construction, designed by the German architect Frei Paul Otto and the architects Behnisch & Partner, is characteristic of the Olympic Park. The light construction was an optical and static sensation in 1972 for the Olympic Games in Munich. The 74,800 qm construction, which is suspended from 58 pylons (steel masts) and consists of translucent Plexiglas, covers the Olympic Stadium, Olympic Hall and the Olympic Swimming Pool.
Over 2 million Plexiglas sheets were used. Each individual plexiglass plate is mounted on rubber buffers to compensate for mechanical expansion when heated and to prevent cracks.
2 million of the 2.90 x 2.90 meter big acrylic glass panels have been installed. |
