Famous Catalan painter Salvador Dalķ |
Figueres, Province of Girona is the birthplace of the famous surrealist painter Salvador Dalķ.
The Persistence of Memory (La persistencia de la memoria), also The melting time or The soft watches called painting, is the most famous picture of the surrealist painter Salvador Dalķ from 1931.
The only 24 × 33 centimeters in size oil painting shows four deliquescent pocket watches, which are painted in the Catalan countryside from the rugged cliffs of the Cap de Creus. On a clock sits a fly that is meant to symbolize how the time flies. Another is eaten by ants, symbolic for transience and decay. In the middle of the picture a clock melts away on a shown in profile, abstracted face of the artist, a motive, as Dalķ had two years before The Great Masturbator used in his work. |
